"A Fortunate Term" by Angela Brazil is a story unfolding in the early 1900s, about two sisters named Mavis and Merle Ramsay who go from a tough industrial town in Whinburn to the beautiful countryside of Durracombe, Devonshire. The move is mostly for Mavis, who has been sick all winter and needs a warmer place to get better. While Mavis stays in bed dreaming of sunshine, Merle is out in the world, bringing home stories from school that are full of trouble and not-so-nice parts of life. But their mom has a plan: she sets them up to go to school in Durracombe, thinking it will be a fresh start, a "fortunate term" for the girls. The book kicks off by showing us who Mavis and Merle are—Mavis, the quiet and careful sister, and Merle, the energetic and do-first sister—as they step into new friendships, face girls who might not like them, and try to fit into their new school.
