Summary

"Odd Man Out" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny story from the early 1900s that shows how friendships can get tricky when love comes into the picture. It's all about Ted Denver and Charlie Brice, two best friends, whose bond is threatened when Ted falls head over heels for Emma White. Suddenly, Charlie feels left out as Ted tries to win Emma's heart. Emma stirs things even more by making Ted pick between her and his best buddy. The story is full of funny situations as the friends deal with love, jealousy, and a widow named Mrs. Jennings, who makes everything even more complicated. In the end, Charlie gets tricked into thinking he's about to be caught by Mrs. Jennings, leading to a hilarious escape where he loses his hat and runs for his life, reminding us how funny and messy relationships can be.
