"The Last Penny and Other Stories" by T. S. Arthur is a group of stories from the 1800s that looks at right and wrong, the problems of daily life, and the hard times people can face. We meet Thomas Claire, a shoemaker, in the first story. He's poor and wants to enjoy himself, but he also wants to take care of his sick daughter, Lizzy. He has trouble deciding whether to spend his last penny on tobacco for himself or an orange for Lizzy. This tough choice makes him start to understand how important it is to think of others first. He begins to see that being selfless can really change things when life gets hard.
