Summary

"Moscow: A Story of the French Invasion of 1812" by Frederick Whishaw is a historical fiction set during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 that follows Count Maximof and his family as they navigate the challenges of war and societal upheaval. The story kicks off with the betrothal of the Count's young son, Sasha, highlighting the traditions of the Russian aristocracy while exposing the stark contrast between their lives and the harsh realities faced by the serfs they rule. This snapshot of high society is quickly disrupted when a wolf attack foreshadows the danger and chaos soon to be unleashed by the invading French army, setting the stage for a tale of power, social class, and the loss of innocence amidst the brutal backdrop of war.
