Summary

"At the Sign of the Sword: A Story of Love and War in Belgium" by William Le Queux is a historical fiction that presents a tale of forbidden love amidst the chaos of World War I in Belgium, depicting the intertwined destinies of Edmond Valentin and Aimee de Neuville as they grapple with societal barriers, family disapproval, and the ominous approach of German forces. The story begins on a peaceful summer day, where a secret riverside meeting reveals Edmond and Aimee's blossoming romance, shadowed by whispers of impending war and complicated by their disparate social classes. As the threat of conflict escalates, their idyllic world is shattered, forcing them to confront the harsh realities of war and the perilous fight to protect their love on the brink of destruction. The narrative expertly captures the sudden shift from peace to the turmoil of battle, exploring themes of love, loyalty, and survival against the backdrop of national conflict.

About the Author

William Tufnell Le Queux was an Anglo-French journalist and writer. He was also a diplomat, a traveller, a flying buff who officiated at the first British air meeting at Doncaster in 1909, and a wireless pioneer who broadcast music from his own station long before radio was generally available; his claims regarding his own abilities and exploits, however, were usually exaggerated. His best-known works are the anti-French and anti-Russian invasion fantasy The Great War in England in 1897 (1894) and the anti-German invasion fantasy The Invasion of 1910 (1906), the latter becoming a bestseller.
