"An Ambitious Man" by Ella Wheeler Wilcox is a compelling story about Preston Cheney, a driven young man trying to make his mark in a world where money and who you know seem to matter most, where he faces tough choices about love and success. He has a complicated relationship with Mabel Lawrence, a woman who cares more about being important than about really loving someone. The story starts with Preston proposing to her, and it is pretty clear she is more into what he can offer her than him as a person. A contrast emerges when Preston develops feelings for Berene Dumont, who unlike Mabel, is far more sincere; while simultaneously both characters are entwined by the trappings of social expectations, they are faced by morality and choices that shape their lives.
