"Rising in the World: A Tale for the Rich and Poor" by T. S. Arthur is a story from the 1800s about two college graduates, Lawrence Dunbar and Lloyd Hudson, chasing their dreams with very different ideas about what matters most. Lawrence is all about getting rich and being important, while Lloyd wants to help people as a doctor. As the men start their careers and relationships, the story looks at what happens when someone is only out for themselves versus when they try to do what's right, even if it's hard. Lawrence gets caught up in trying to climb the social ladder, even seeing love as just a way to get ahead. Meanwhile, Lloyd sticks to his good values, no matter what. The book sets up a big question: what's more important, success or being a good person, and how do our choices change our lives?
