The tale follows Doctor Dolittle, his young pal Tommy Stubbins, and many interesting animal friends. We first meet Tommy Stubbins in the story, who is very interested in exploring on the open sea. He lives in Puddleby-on-the-Marsh and dreams of adventures outside his town and when he saves a hurt squirrel, he discovers Doctor Dolittle, the town’s famous animal expert. When Tommy meets Joe, who works with mussels, and Matthew Mugg, who sells food for cats, he starts learning more about the Doctor leading to an adventure when he finds Doctor Dolittle and his many animal companions.
