Summary

"Nurse Heatherdale's Story" by Mrs. Molesworth is a story about Martha Heatherdale, a nursemaid who looks back on her time with the Penrose family, especially the three Penrose girls and their cousin, Master Francis. Set in the past, the story seems to explore themes of childhood innocence, caring for others, and social class differences, all told through Martha's memories. The story begins as Martha reflects on first seeing the Penrose children playing on a summer day. She remembers how happy and connected they seemed, particularly Miss Bess, the oldest girl, and Master Francis, who has a slight limp. Martha expresses both a tenderness for children and sorrow as she remembers times in her life that she has lost, while watching them, and pondering her future with the children.
