Summary

"Monsieur de Camors — Complete" by Octave Feuillet is a late 19th-century novel that keenly observes French aristocratic society through complicated relationships and moral challenges amid a period of rapid change. The main character, Louis de Camors, steps out of the shadow of his father's suicide and struggles with his inheritance of materialism and existential ideas. The story begins with Comte de Camors preparing for death, expressing a deep disappointment with life in a letter to his son, promoting a philosophy of freedom without moral rules. This shapes Louis de Camors's journey as he deals with his father's beliefs while discovering his own identity. Early on, we also see key relationships, like Louis's friendship with Lescande, whose very different life shows different ways of life from similar noble beginnings, highlighting moral decline, ambition, and emotional battles, inviting us to deeply consider the characters' minds as they live through the changes of 19th-century France.

About the Author

Octave Feuillet was a French novelist and dramatist. His work stands midway between the romanticists and the realists. He is renowned for his "distinguished and lucid portraiture of life", depictions of female characters, analyses of characters' psychologies and feelings, and his reserved but witty prose style. His most popular work remains his 1858 novel Le Roman d'un jeune homme pauvre, which has been adapted for film many times by Italian, French, and Argentinian directors.
