Summary

** "The Whirlpool" by George Gissing is a glimpse into Victorian society through the eyes of Harvey Rolfe, a man of independent means grappling with the complexities of relationships, morality, and social expectations. The story begins with Rolfe reflecting on his past struggles with poverty and observing the ambitions of those around him, like Cecil Morphew, who risks everything for financial gain. Key themes like the nature of domestic life, the dangers of gambling, and conflicts between social classes appear through Rolfe's interactions with friends like Hugh Carnaby and other members of his London social circles. As the story unfolds, hints of personal and social crises emerge, setting the stage for a journey exploring the lives and challenges faced by these characters. **
