Summary

"The Paying Guest" by George Gissing is a story set in the late 1800s, and centers on Clarence and Emmeline Mumford, a young married couple who choose to rent a room to Louise Derrick. They hope the money will help their financial struggles, and Emmeline wants a friend to spend time with. The story looks at ideas about social class and what people expect, along with the tricky parts of relationships, especially between the couple and their new housemate. At first, the Mumfords are worried about money and see Ms. Derrick's ad. Clarence is excited, but Emmeline is unsure about Louise. Louise seems nice, but her family is strange and this makes Emmeline concerned. The book hints that things will get dramatic as Ms. Derrick's history and dreams get mixed up with the Mumfords' daily lives.
