Summary

"Cousin Mary" by Mrs. Oliphant is a late 1800s story centered on Mary Burnet, a young woman from the ordinary Prescott family, as they deal with love, social status, and what society expects. The arrival of Mr. Asquith, a new religious leader, stirs things up for Mary and suggests a bigger story about how their lives connect. The Prescott family, once important, is now just regular people. Mary is seen as a happy but unnoticed girl who helps her family with small jobs. When Mr. Asquith comes to town, Mary becomes interested in him, seeing him as more than just someone living nearby. Their growing bond shows the difference between her pureness and his inner battles with being poor compared to wanting a better future with her, suggesting their relationship will be hard because of social rules and their own emotions.
