Summary

"The Rover" by Joseph Conrad is a gripping novel set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, telling the story of Master-Gunner Peyrol, a former sea captain who seeks solace in his homeland after a long and turbulent life of lawlessness. Arriving in Toulon with a damaged ship, Peyrol is immediately confronted with the stark reality of a nation transformed by revolutionary zeal. This seasoned mariner, known as a "Brother of the Coast," finds himself torn between a desire for a peaceful existence and the weight of his past misdeeds. As Peyrol makes his way ashore, he reflects on his adventurous youth and the heavy cost of years spent at sea, setting the stage for a tale of personal redemption amidst the chaos of historical change.

About the Author

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British novelist and story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and although he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he became a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote novels and stories, many in nautical settings that depict crises of human individuality in the midst of what he saw as an indifferent, inscrutable and amoral world.
