Summary

"The Secret Sharer" by Joseph Conrad is a story that captures the journey of a newly appointed sea captain, navigating his first command in the Gulf of Siam, who's journey takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Leggatt, a fugitive sailor seeking refuge on his ship. Struggling with his own sense of isolation and the weight of his new role, the captain finds himself drawn to Leggatt, who is fleeing the consequences of a past action. As the captain navigates the moral complexities of his position, he makes the risky decision to protect Leggatt, leading to a climactic moment where he orchestrates Leggatt's escape. This choice forces him to confront his own identity and the blurred lines between right and wrong, revealing the profound connection and shared burdens between the two men, ultimately exploring the deeper duality of human nature.

About the Author

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British novelist and story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and although he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he became a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote novels and stories, many in nautical settings that depict crises of human individuality in the midst of what he saw as an indifferent, inscrutable and amoral world.
