Summary

"Newton Forster" by Frederick Marryat is a historical fiction novel set in the 1800's, focused primarily on Edward Forster, a retired Navy lieutenant living a quiet life in a cottage by the sea, reflecting on his naval career. The story begins with Edward, injured and contemplative since his naval departure, and the peace of his retirement is disturbed one stormy night when he hears a ship in distress. Impelled by duty despite harsh conditions, Edward springs into action, launching the novel into a tale of human perseverance, maritime difficulties, and the intricate relationships within the seafaring community during a period of British history. By emphasizing the struggles of seamen and the uncertainty of life at sea, the story illustrates both nature's force and the fortitude of those who brave it.

About the Author

Captain Frederick Marryat was a Royal Navy officer and a novelist. He is noted today as an early pioneer of nautical fiction, particularly for his semi-autobiographical novel Mr Midshipman Easy (1836). He is remembered also for his children's novel The Children of the New Forest (1847). In addition, he developed a widely used system of maritime flag signalling, known as Marryat's Code.
