Summary

"A Journey to Katmandu (the Capital of Napaul), with the Camp of Jung Bahadoor" by Laurence Oliphant is a 19th-century travelogue that follows the author's expedition with the Nepaulese ambassador, Jung Bahadoor, offering readers a window into the cultural, geographical, and political landscapes of Nepal at the time. From the grandeur of Jung Bahadoor's arrival in Ceylon, bearing a letter from the Queen of England, the story traces their path through India, including Colombo, Calcutta, and Benares, as they embark on a journey to Katmandu; the writer contrasts Western civilization and the somewhat uncivilized form of Nepali society, which forms the foundation for a detailed description of their journey into the Himalayan kingdom.
