Summary

"Katy Gaumer" by Elsie Singmaster is a story set in the early 1900s, about a lively young woman, Katy Gaumer, who lives with her grandparents in the peaceful town of Millerstown. Katy is full of imagination and ambition. She longs for a life more exciting than her small town can offer. The story begins as Katy braves the winter weather to pick up her grandfather's newspaper. She appreciates the beauty around her but hopes for more than Millerstown's quiet life. We see the loving relationships within her family and meet her interesting neighbor, Bevy. Katy's eagerness grows when she learns that her Uncle Daniel, who is a governor, will visit; she dreams of getting an education, showing her big hopes for the future, getting ready for the adventures and obstacles that await her.

Elsie Singmaster Lewars was an American author from Macungie, Pennsylvania, who has been described as "perhaps Macungie's most famous citizen". She was a Newbery Honor recipient in 1934.
