Summary

"Jeremy and Hamlet" by Hugh Walpole is a heartwarming story that takes place in a small English town during the late 1800s. It follows a young boy and his dog as they experience life. The story starts with Hamlet, a dog who has become used to hanging around in the kitchen since Jeremy, his young owner, has been at school. While Hamlet considers his place between loyalty to Jeremy and his newfound comfort, Jeremy is coming home from school after a long time away. The book hints at exploring the relationship between the boy and his dog as well as what life is like within the boy’s family. The author uses a nostalgic tone to tell a sometimes funny and sometimes sad story about what it is like to be a kid.

About the Author

Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole, CBE was an English novelist. He was the son of an Anglican clergyman, intended for a career in the church but drawn instead to writing. Among those who encouraged him were the authors Henry James and Arnold Bennett. His skill at scene-setting and vivid plots, as well as his high profile as a lecturer, brought him a large readership in the United Kingdom and North America. He was a best-selling author in the 1920s and 1930s but has been largely neglected since his death.
