Summary

"A Daughter of the Land" by Gene Stratton-Porter is a story about a girl named Kate Bates wanting to be free and make her own choices in a time when families and society had different expectations for women. Kate, one of many kids in her family, dreams of going to school and being her own boss. She feels stuck doing chores at home, and she thinks about what she's worth and what she wants for her life. After disagreeing with her mother about her dreams, Kate decides to do something about it and get an education because she feels like her family doesn't appreciate her. She goes to her brother Adam's house, which makes her want to be independent even more. Kate's strong personality helps her fight against the rules that her family and society have made for her.
