Summary

"The Aristocrats" by Gertrude Franklin Horn Atherton is a story that unfolds through letters from Lady Helen Pole to her friend, the Countess of Edge and Ross, detailing her experiences in the Great North Woods of New York. Through Helen's eyes, the story portrays her interactions and sharp observations of the stunning, raw wilderness of the Adirondacks and her brother Bertie's illness. Woven amongst the beautiful landscape, she contrasts the local people's simple authenitic lifestyle with her own aristocratic life. Her letters expose her compassion towards her brother, and her companion Agatha, as she navigates a life of introspection versus the society of nature.
