Summary

"Woman on Her Own, False Gods and The Red Robe" by Eugène Brieux is a gathering of three plays from the early 1900s that study women finding their way in the world, what society expects of them, and the hard choices people face, especially when it comes to marriage and their jobs. The first play is about Thérèse, an aspiring actress, who is trying to be independent in a time when things are changing for women. She wants to make her own way instead of just doing what people think she should. Her godparents are having money problems but don't want her to worry. Thérèse finds out she doesn't have as much money as she thought, which makes her fiancé worry because his family might not like it. She wants to be able to take care of herself, so she decides to become a writer.
