Summary

"Madame Bovary" by Gustave Flaubert is a novel that explores the life of Emma Bovary, a woman living in a small French village, and her pursuit of love and happiness beyond her ordinary world. The story looks at big ideas like wanting more than you have, being unhappy with your life, and the rules of society, all through Emma's journey. The story begins by introducing Charles Bovary, a plain country doctor, along with his early difficulties, and then shifts to Emma Rouault, a farmer's daughter with dreams of romance fueled by novels. As Emma gets married to Charles, she becomes increasingly unhappy with her ordinary life, which sets her on a path to seek a more exciting reality, and hints at the troubles that will follow.

About the Author

Gustave Flaubert was a French novelist. He has been considered the leading exponent of literary realism in his country and abroad. According to the literary theorist Kornelije Kvas, "in Flaubert, realism strives for formal perfection, so the presentation of reality tends to be neutral, emphasizing the values and importance of style as an objective method of presenting reality". He is known especially for his debut novel Madame Bovary (1857), his Correspondence, and his scrupulous devotion to his style and aesthetics. The celebrated short story writer Guy de Maupassant was a protégé of Flaubert.
