Summary

"The Lonely" by Judith Merril is a science fiction story that takes place in the future, about how humans and aliens struggle to understand each other since they are so different. It follows a group of female humans on a spaceship, the Terrans, trying to talk to aliens called Arlemites on Aldebaran VI. Since the Terran crew can’t reproduce and come from a different culture, it causes problems and confusion. The story highlights how hard it is to communicate and connect when societies are so unalike, and it looks at loneliness and the surprising ways people can connect through difficult times.

About the Author
