Summary

"Daddy-Long-Legs" by Jean Webster is a heartwarming story about a young, thoughtful orphan named Jerusha Abbott who gets a life-changing opportunity. After spending her childhood at the John Grier Home for Orphans, Jerusha's intelligence and imagination catch the eye of a mysterious man who offers her a scholarship to college. She knows him only as "Daddy-Long-Legs," and she must write him letters about her studies and adventures. Through these letters, we see Jerusha blossom as she experiences college, makes friends, and chases her dream of becoming a writer. The central theme revolves around her journey to become independent and discover who she is, while also dealing with the challenges that come her way.

About the Author

Jean Webster was the pen name of Alice Jane Chandler Webster, an American author whose books include Daddy-Long-Legs and Dear Enemy. Her best-known books feature lively and likeable young female protagonists who come of age intellectually, morally, and socially, but with enough humor, snappy dialogue, and gently biting social commentary to make her books palatable and enjoyable to contemporary readers.
