Summary

"Cyropaedia: The Education of Cyrus" by Xenophon is a story from ancient times that tells about the life of Cyrus the Great, who started the Persian Empire, focusing on how he grew up to be a great leader and person. It shows how Cyrus learned to rule, fight, and be a good person, and what kind of leader is best. Early in the book, it talks about how hard it is for people to follow leaders compared to how easily animals follow their herders. Cyrus, the son of Cambyses and Mandane, is shown as a kid, and he is fair, kind, and faithful, which makes his grandfather, King Astyages, like him. This beginning of the book points out Cyrus's natural skills and the rules he had to follow to learn important good habits, getting him ready to lead many people and cultures.

About the Author

Xenophon of Athens was a Greek military leader, philosopher, and historian. At the age of 30, he was elected as one of the leaders of the retreating Greek mercenaries, the Ten Thousand, who had been part of Cyrus's attempt to seize control of the Achaemenid Empire. As the military historian Theodore Ayrault Dodge wrote, "the centuries since have devised nothing to surpass the genius of this warrior". Xenophon established precedents for many logistical operations and was among the first to describe strategic flanking maneuvers and feints in combat.
