Summary

"The Project Gutenberg Works of Xenophon: An Index" by Xenophon is a reference work put together in the 21st century to organize the writings of Xenophon, an important ancient Greek writer and thinker from the 300s BC. Because it is displayed as an index providing summaries of his writings, it gives a wide view into Xenophon's interests, which included politics, philosophy, and historical events. It walks readers through Xenophon's books, such as "Anabasis", which tells the story of his journey with Greek soldiers through Persia, and "The Memorabilia", which has conversations with Socrates. Also, the book presents quick descriptions of Xenophon's writings about government, war tactics, and farming, showing how skilled and knowledgeable he was in these subjects. The book helps readers and experts understand Xenophon's writings and ideas, thus helping in the understanding of his influence on history and philosophy.

About the Author

Xenophon of Athens was a Greek military leader, philosopher, and historian. At the age of 30, he was elected as one of the leaders of the retreating Greek mercenaries, the Ten Thousand, who had been part of Cyrus's attempt to seize control of the Achaemenid Empire. As the military historian Theodore Ayrault Dodge wrote, "the centuries since have devised nothing to surpass the genius of this warrior". Xenophon established precedents for many logistical operations and was among the first to describe strategic flanking maneuvers and feints in combat.
