Summary

"Illustrated Catalogue of the Collections Obtained from the Pueblos of Zuñi, New Mexico, and Wolpi, Arizona" by James Stevenson is a detailed record of artifacts collected from the Zuñi and Wolpi pueblos in the late 1800s, functioning as a guide to the lives and culture of these Native American tribes. Stevenson introduces the catalogue, highlighting the crucial work of collaborators like Frank H. Cushing, whose Zuñi language skills helped greatly in the field. The collection, which contains almost five thousand items, is made up mostly of stone and clay objects that show how the Zuñi and Moki Indians lived, what their customs were, and how they expressed themselves artistically. The catalogue describes each item, explains how it was used, and points out its significance to the culture, all accompanied by pictures perfect for anyone with interests in anthropology, archaeology, and the story of Native Americans.
