Summary

"Mignon; or, Bootles' Baby" by John Strange Winter is a story set within a late 19th-century military barracks where the life of Captain Algernon Ferrers—known as "Bootles"—takes an unexpected turn when he discovers a baby girl, Mignon, left in his care with a note claiming she is his. This revelation sparks a mix of confusion and amusement among his fellow officers as Bootles grapples with the complexities of instant fatherhood, learning to care for Mignon while navigating the lively social dynamics of his military life amid light-hearted jokes and an increasing bond with the child, all while trying to unravel the mystery of Mignon's origins.
