Summary

"Prize Money" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny short story that takes place around 1900, and tells of a small-town lottery, full of luck, suspicion, and friendship. The story follows normal people in a small village who gather at 'The Cauliflower,' a local pub. The men of Claybury put in money to win a food basket with drinks. Bob Pretty wins the hamper after drawing the first number. All the others think he cheated and grow to resent Bob. To get the hamper back, they come up with funny plans and face problems of trust. In the end, they play out a series of misguided attempt to take the hamper back, all while dealing with themes of jealously and friendship.
