Summary

"Peter's Pence" by W. W. Jacobs is a humorous tale that looks at family connections and outward images in the life of Peter Russet, an unassuming sailor. Peter's quiet life takes a turn when he gets a letter from his rich uncle, George Goodman, a teetotaler whom Peter has avoided for over twenty years. Encouraged by his friends Sam and Ginger, Peter reluctantly invites his uncle to stay, hoping for some financial gain. Goodman's visit to London introduces a clash of cultures, as the sailor's lifestyle meets the strict values of his uncle. The tension becomes especially apparent as Goodman and Sam secretly enjoy alcohol while pretending to follow his teetotaling ideals, exposing the funny hypocrisies of social expectations and the absurdities that follow.
