Summary

"Family Cares" by W. W. Jacobs is a funny story set in the early 1900s about a man named Mr. Harry Barrett coming back to his hometown after living in Australia for years. The book looks at being nostalgic, what people expect about marriage and family, and the funny problems that happen when Mr. Barrett tries to deal with his old relationships. The story follows Mr. Barrett talking to his friend Mr. Jernshaw and other people in town, especially how he doesn't want to face his feelings for Miss Prentice and the made-up stories he tells about losing his wife and kids in Australia. As the story goes on, Mr. Barrett's supposed freedom is challenged by the new schoolteacher, Miss Grace Lindsay, who makes him rethink the stories he made up. As he struggles with his conscience and the silliness of his lies, funny mistakes happen. Miss Lindsay starts to think his stories aren't true, leading to the idea that his children might be alive after all, showing a mix of comedy and social commentary.
