Summary

"The Gifts of Asti" by Andre Norton is a thrilling fantasy novel set in an ancient world teetering on the edge of destruction. The story plunges into the life of Varta, the final priestess of Asti, who is forced to flee the fallen city of Memphir after a brutal barbarian invasion. Accompanied by Lur, a scaled being connected to her mind, Varta faces daunting challenges and unravels the mysteries of her world. Their journey leads them through harsh environments, where they uncover forgotten relics of a space-faring civilization and face the enigma of a living lake. As Varta travels, she discovers her true calling as a guardian and takes steps that may restore a lost legacy by resurrecting an ancient traveler from another world. The narrative weaves a tale of resilience, destiny, and Varta’s determined quest for truth, as she bravely navigates a world touched by both ancient magic and advanced technology, all under the grace of her god, Asti.
