When their young relative, Theodosia, comes to visit with big dreams, her experiences quickly become mixed with joy and sadness. The story shows how their lives connect and how the things they go through change them. The book starts with a crowded ferry, which feels like how everyone's just trying to get through life, and then zooms in to show some of the people in the crowd and their individual paths.
