Summary

"Chance: A Tale in Two Parts" by Joseph Conrad is a story set in the late 1800s where a young man named Charles Powell begins his journey as a second mate, leading him through a world filled with fateful meetings and the weight of choices. As Powell dines at a riverside inn, he has a conversation with another yachtsman named Powell, which makes him think deeply about what it means to follow his seafaring dreams and the importance of doing his duty. Soon after, he looks for a job on a ship called the "Ferndale", feeling both excited and worried as he stands at the door of an uncertain future, teaching us about how people deal with life's randomness.

About the Author

Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British novelist and story writer. He is regarded as one of the greatest writers in the English language and although he did not speak English fluently until his twenties, he became a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. He wrote novels and stories, many in nautical settings that depict crises of human individuality in the midst of what he saw as an indifferent, inscrutable and amoral world.
