Summary

"A Chance Acquaintance" by William Dean Howells is a story of a young woman named Kitty Ellison and her captivating journey to Canada, filled with dreams of beautiful sights and new friendships. Eager to discover the refined society of Boston, she finds herself drawn to Mr. Miles Arbuton, a reserved young man from that esteemed city. As Kitty begins her adventure, she thinks of her uncle's high praise for Boston and its important people, which fuels her excitement and sets the scene for her to encounter this new world. At the same time, Mr. Arbuton, a man burdened by the rules of his social class, enters the scene. Their early encounters reveal clashing ideas about how one should live and what is important, reflecting the complex social landscape that defines their experiences as they navigate the Canadian landscape.
