Summary

** "The Strength of Gideon and Other Stories" by Paul Laurence Dunbar is a compilation that dives into the experiences of African Americans in the late 1800s. Through various tales, it examines the search for who you are, the importance of love, and the yearning to be free, usually focusing on characters trying to make their way in a world separated by race. In the first story, "The Strength of Gideon," we are introduced to a boy named Gideon, whose birth was celebrated with a moving speech. Gideon grows up to be a kid with strong morals and a sense of duty and is seen as a leader by those around him. The beginning lays the groundwork for Gideon's journey, concentrating on his bond with his mom and the problems he will come up against in a society defined by the fight for respect and the conflicts it brings. **
