Summary

"The Heart of Happy Hollow" by Paul Laurence Dunbar is a series of stories that paint a vivid picture of African American life in a small Southern town during the late 1800s. Dunbar uses compelling characters and situations to examine ideas about community, who people are, and the problems caused by racism and how society is structured. In the first story, readers meet Robinson Asbury, a barber who enters the world of politics, this story shows the difficulties and disloyalty he faces while dealing with race and power. Dunbar sets Happy Hollow as a symbolic place where happiness and hardship exist at the same time by sharing the daily lives, dreams, and struggles of its residents.
