Summary

"A Maid of the Silver Sea" by John Oxenham is a story set on the island of Sark, following the lives of siblings Nance and Tom. As mining changes peaceful island life, family struggles and the impact of modern times become important themes. The book opens with Nance and Tom clashing, as Nance shows dislike for the mining activity changing their home. Tom acts mischievous as him and Nance tease each other. About the Author

William Arthur Dunkerley was an English journalist, novelist and poet. He was born in Manchester, spent a short time after his marriage in the US before moving to Ealing, West London, where he served as deacon and teacher at the Ealing Congregational Church from the 1880s. In 1922 he moved to Worthing in Sussex, where he became the town's mayor.
