"Hidden Water" by Dane Coolidge is a story located in the Old West where a newcomer, Rufus Hardy, tries to avoid the conflict between cattlemen and sheepmen, while themes such as rivalry and land rights are explored. Hardy, who is a pacifist, gets involved in the conflict when he begins working as a sheep expert for the Dos S Ranch. The story kicks off in a bar where cowboys and sheepmen are waiting out a storm, drinking and partying. Hardy doesn't take part in the customs of the cowboys which makes the barkeeper angry. Hardy soon talks to Jefferson Creede who works at the Dos S, and learns that a fight for water and land is coming, which will test Hardy's courage in the wild and ever-changing west.
