Summary

"The Gentleman: A Romance of the Sea" by Alfred Ollivant is a gripping tale set in the early 1800s, possibly during the Napoleonic Wars, that plunges readers into a world of naval adventures, where the weight of duty, the pursuit of honor, and the harsh realities of seafaring collide. We follow young Kit Caryll, an eager midshipman on the "Tremendous," who is ready to carve his own destiny and carry on his family's naval heritage. A sense of urgency takes hold as the scene is set for battles involving the Galloping Gentleman. The excitement builds as a rider and his grey horse collapse from strain, pushing Kit toward his calling. As Kit becomes one of the crew of the "Tremendous", the reader sees both friendship and conflict among the sailors, where the story's beginnings highlight the intense world that promises suspense coupled with the testing of honor amid perilous situations.
