Summary

"Travels of Lady Hester Stanhope, Volume 3 (of 3)" by Lady Hester Stanhope is a mid-19th century historical telling of remarkable journeys. It follows Lady Hester Stanhope, a pioneering female traveler, as she navigates the Middle East, with a spotlight on Bâlbec and surrounding areas. It displays the landscapes, traditions, and societies she discovers. The book starts with Lady Hester preparing for a trip to Bâlbec, despite fears of the plague. Her large group and ample supplies contrast sharply with the difficulties they face, like getting lost and a solitary night in the wilderness. She meets the Drûze people, experiences their generosity, and thinks deeply about the struggles of the local villages, painting a vibrant picture of 19th-century Syrian life and the strength needed for such adventures.

About the Author

Lady Hester Lucy Stanhope was a British adventurer, writer, antiquarian, and one of the most famous travellers of her age. Her excavation of Ascalon in 1815 is considered the first to use modern archaeological principles, and her use of a medieval Italian document is described as "one of the earliest uses of textual sources by field archaeologists". Her letters and memoirs made her famous as an explorer.
