Summary

"Man of Distinction" by Michael Shaara is a science fiction story set in the future, diving into the life of Thatcher Blitt, a businessman who's made it big but feels incomplete because he can't find any famous people in his family tree. He runs a company that digs up family histories using time-traveling technology. As he gets richer, he becomes obsessed with finding a cool ancestor to prove he's someone special. But, the deeper he digs, the more he realizes his family is just a bunch of regular folks. After going all the way back 40,000 years and discovering no one in his line ever stood out, he realizes that his lack of notable ancestors is what actually makes him unique. The story questions what makes a person important and whether fame and family history really matter.
