Lovey Mary

"Lovey Mary" by Alice Caldwell Hegan Rice is a story about a young orphan named Lovey Mary as she grows up in the early 1900s. Lovey Mary deals with not feeling good enough and wanting to be loved and accepted. Even though life at the orphanage is hard, Lovey Mary is both rebellious and caring. Her character has many layers, and she's trying to find where she belongs in the world. In the beginning, Lovey Mary is shown as funny but also sad as she talks to Miss Bell, the head of the orphanage. She wants to be seen as beautiful and is against what is true. This desire to matter even more blooms when she has to take care of a baby named Tommy, and a very strong need to protect him comes out. Lovey Mary struggles with how she looks, doesn't like the orphanage, and loves Tommy very much. The story starts with Lovey being both insecure and determined, drawing readers into her journey to find out who she is and where she fits in.
