Summary

"Moby Dick; Or, The Whale" by Herman Melville is a tale set in the 1800s about whaling. The story is told by a man named Ishmael, who joins the crew of the Pequod, a whaling ship led by Captain Ahab. Ahab is a puzzling man with an all-consuming desire to hunt down Moby Dick, a whale of great size. It looks at the ideas of being overly focused on something, how people connect to the world around them, and questions about life, all within the dangerous world of whale hunting. Ishmael wants to find peace on the ocean, and he's drawn to the adventure and mystery of the enormous whale. With the sea's charm, he travels to New Bedford and meets Queequeg, a skilled harpooner from a faraway island. Their friendship shows different cultures and the challenges ahead as they set sail.

About the Author

Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. Among his best-known works are Moby-Dick (1851); Typee (1846), a romanticized account of his experiences in Polynesia; and Billy Budd, Sailor, a posthumously published novella. At the time of his death Melville was not well known to the public, but 1919, the centennial of his birth, was the starting point of a Melville revival. Moby-Dick eventually would be considered one of the great American novels.
