Summary

"The Return" by Walter de la Mare is a tale from the early 1900s about Arthur Lawford, who, after being sick, wanders through an old churchyard, but upon returning home, he feels different. This change leads him on a journey to understand who he is and how he relates to others. At the start, Arthur is in a quiet churchyard, thinking about life and death. The calm place gives him a chance to think deeply about his past and what it means to be alive. But when he wakes up after falling asleep, he finds his looks have completely changed, making him panic about who he is. As he deals with his new appearance and how people react, especially his wife Sheila, the story looks at ideas of being alone, what is real, and trying to stay true to yourself when things change in unexpected ways.
