Summary

"Gargantua and Pantagruel, Illustrated, Book 2" by François Rabelais is a creative story from the Renaissance that follows the giant Pantagruel and his dad, Gargantua, on more exciting escapades, mixing jokes, smart thoughts, and views on life. The story starts by showing off Rabelais's cool world, stuffed with weird stuff and over-the-top folks who test what's normal. It kicks off with Rabelais's funny thoughts about where Pantagruel came from and how Gargantua felt happy and sad when his son was born. Rabelais shows off his special writing style, using made-up words and making fun of stuff while hinting at history and teaching moral lessons. Expect themes about learning, what people expect from you, and how silly life can be, all while Pantagruel grows up and has his own adventures; the story is funny but also makes you think, as giants deal with human mistakes.

About the Author

François Rabelais was a French writer who has been called the first great French prose author. A humanist of the French Renaissance and Greek scholar, he attracted opposition from both Protestant theologian John Calvin and from the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. Though in his day he was best known as a physician, scholar, diplomat, and Catholic priest, later he became better known as a satirist for his depictions of the grotesque, and for his larger-than-life characters.
