Summary

"The Portrait of a Lady — Volume 2" by Henry James is a story that unfolds in Europe during the late 1800s, following Isabel Archer as she tries to figure out love, freedom, and who she wants to be. She has to make tough choices and deal with what people expect of her, especially as she's interested in Lord Warburton and Gilbert Osmond. Early on, the story shows Isabel at the opera, mixed-up about her feelings for these two men. Lord Warburton gets jealous, and Mr. Osmond stays mysterious. Talking with her friend Ralph Touchett challenges Isabel as she seeks to understand love and marriage. The relationships between Isabel and others show the difficulties as she has to deal with what she wants versus what society expects.
