Summary

"Partial Portraits" by Henry James is a compilation of essays that explores prominent writers of the 1800s. These essays analyze key people in culture through their impact on literature and their known personal lives. James seeks to provide readers with a deep interpretation of these subjects, which includes their overall perspectives, writing approaches, and the time period they lived in. The book starts with an essay about Ralph Waldo Emerson, as James gives his opinion on a biography about Emerson. James respects Emerson's spiritual thinking; however, in James's opinion the biography fails to capture the true essence of Emerson. The opening explores James' thoughtful writing, setting the stage for insight into important figures.
