Summary

"Daisy Miller: A Study" by Henry James is a late 19th-century novella that examines social norms through Daisy Miller, a young American woman touring Europe alongside her family. We follow her relationships, especially with Winterbourne, a young American man torn between his growing affection for Daisy and what society expects. The story begins in a Swiss hotel filled with American tourists, where Winterbourne, a keen observer, is captivated by Daisy's beauty and unique spirit. Their connection begins when Winterbourne befriends Daisy’s brother, Randolph, and he becomes fascinated by Daisy’s straightforward nature and captivating American charm. Even though she seems unaware of European social norms, Daisy desires freedom and fun, which challenges Winterbourne as he tries to balance his feelings for her with the strict rules of the social elite. This sets the scene for a deeper look at the contrast between American enthusiasm and the more reserved European way of life.
